An analyser can bring several signals onto one screen at once. The moment it does, its job changes from showing a signal to keeping them apart.

Values from several sources can be linked and read together on the instrument. That is the point of it, and it is also where the screen begins to work against itself. Once traces share an axis, being visible is not the same as being individually readable — which one is which, which one moved, and whether what looks like a single reading is two of them lying on top of each other.

Colour alone does not settle that. Whatever carries the distinction has to survive the room the instrument is standing in, the eyesight of the person reading it, and the fact that a value is usually recognised at a glance rather than studied.

The other half was the settings. One instrument goes to a laboratory bench, to a shielded chamber and to a working site, and is picked up by a specialist one day and by someone running a routine check the next. A default is a claim about who is using it and where. So the question was which configurations deserve to exist as environments a person selects, rather than as preferences each of them rebuilds at the start of every session.

UX consulting on the legibility of combined signal information, and on setting the instrument's environments by place of use and type of user.
