PS-REP-151 · r1 REPRESENTATION INFERRED ENGAGED

DERIVED VIEW PRECEDENCE

The processed answer sits where the eye lands first; the evidence for it sits below.

01   DEFINITION

Condition in which a derived result and the raw signal it came from are presented together, and the order they are read in decides whether an experienced operator exercises their own judgement or defers it.

02   CONDITIONS

UNCERTAINTY CONFLICTING The derived result and the raw signal each support a different reading, and both are internally consistent.
TIME PRESSURE MODERATE There is time to consult one of them properly, and not both.
ERROR ASYMMETRY ASYMMETRIC Deferring to a wrong derived result costs more than checking one that was right.
OPERATOR STATE DEDICATED The operator has the expertise to overrule it, which is exactly the expertise that erodes when it is not exercised.

03   WHERE IT APPEARS

MARITIMEA judgement made by ear has to survive being redrawn as a trace on glass.
MEDICALA waveform is shown to someone who was trained to listen for it.
MANUFACTURINGA defect is graded from an image whose lighting decided half the grade.
FINANCEA figure is displayed to more places than the estimate behind it supports.

04   WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE

The brief was accuracy. The problem turned out to be reading order — a computed result sat where the eye lands first, and the signal it came from sat below it. The operators able to tell when the computed view was wrong were the same ones who had stopped looking at it. The work went into the order, not the computation.

What stays unresolved is how the derived view stays available without becoming the default reading — the operators who can tell when it is wrong are the ones most likely to stop looking.
