04 WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE
Cleaning up the picture removed what people were looking for along with what obscured it, because the two were the same material. The operators who were good at this were not finding objects; they were reading a grain and noticing where it went wrong. The work went into leaving that grain intact while making it easier to stay with for hours, rather than into deciding on their behalf what was in it.
What stays unresolved is what a surface can offer a reader whose skill is in the texture — an aid that marks candidates teaches people to look where it marks, and the readings that found what such an aid missed were the reason the skill was worth having.
