REPRESENTATION

ENGAGED · ONGOING
FRAME OF REFERENCE SPLIT
The operator faces one way, the thing they are moving faces another, and only one of the two is felt.
01 DEFINITION
Condition in which the operator is carried by one body and controls a second that turns independently of it, so the direction the operator senses and the direction the controlled element is facing are different facts, and only the first arrives without being displayed.
02 CONDITIONS
UNCERTAINTY
MISSING
One of the two headings is felt and the other is not shown; neither is stated together with the other.
TIME PRESSURE
SHORT
The confusion surfaces at the moment a direction has to be chosen quickly.
ERROR ASYMMETRY
ASYMMETRIC
Moving the controlled element the wrong way and hesitating over which way is right carry different costs.
OPERATOR STATE
DEDICATED
The operator is enclosed and reading a surface rather than the surroundings.
03 WHERE IT APPEARS
CONSTRUCTIONThe cab faces one way and the arm reaches another, and the operator feels only the cab.
LOGISTICSThe carrier and the handling element point independently, and the operator is seated in one of them.
MEDICALAn instrument inside the body is oriented to the body while the hand outside it is oriented to the room.
MARITIMEWhat is mounted turns against a hull that is itself turning, so bearing means two different things at once.
INDUSTRIALA remotely moved element has a heading of its own while the operator has the heading of the station they sit at.
DEFENSEThe body carrying the operator and the element the operator moves have separate headings and no shared indication.
04 WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE
Enclosed, the operator had one direction available to the body and a different one available to the thing being moved, and nothing joined them. The work went into what the display owes about the frame the operator is standing in, rather than into the frame it was already showing.
What stays unresolved is which of the two frames a surface should be drawn in — showing the controlled element's view loses where the operator is, and showing the operator's loses what the element is doing.
