REPRESENTATION
OBSERVED
ENGAGED
GROUP-LEVEL OPACITY
The only way to show all of them is as one shape, and the one that is wrong is inside it.
01 DEFINITION
Condition in which the number of elements being monitored exceeds what can be shown one by one, so they are shown as a group, and the level chosen for that grouping decides which departure from normal stops being visible before anyone has judged it unimportant.
02 CONDITIONS
UNCERTAINTY
MISSING
Whether the group is still uniform is not carried by the thing that represents the group.
TIME PRESSURE
MODERATE
The cost appears over the period in which the departure grows unnoticed, not at any single instant.
ERROR ASYMMETRY
ASYMMETRIC
Folding a departure into a group and expanding a group that did not need it do not cost the same.
OPERATOR STATE
SUPERVISORY
The operator oversees the set rather than any member of it, which is why the set is what gets drawn.
03 WHERE IT APPEARS
LOGISTICSFleets are read as counts and averages long before they are read as vehicles, and the vehicle that has stopped behaving like the rest is inside the average.
TELECOMHealth is presented per region or per pool because per-node is unreadable, and the pool stays green while one member does not.
MEDICALWards are watched as aggregates of the people in them, and the aggregate holds its shape while one of them departs from it.
ENERGYGeneration and draw are shown by group because the individual units exceed what a surface can carry, and a unit drifting alone does not move the group figure.
MANUFACTURINGLine status stands for every station on it, and a station beginning to fail is inside the status that says the line is running.
DEFENSELarge numbers of elements are presented as formations because presenting them individually fills the surface, and the element out of formation is inside the formation shape.
04 WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE
The count was past anything that could be drawn one at a time, so the question was never how to draw them but where to stop distinguishing. Every candidate grouping was defensible until it was asked which departure it would hide. The work went into what a group has to keep visible about its own variance.
What stays unresolved is how a group conveys that it is no longer uniform without giving up the compression that made it readable — the summary is worth having precisely when there is too much to check, which is when what it leaves out matters most.
