IDENTITY UNDER PARTIAL DATA

A fragment is matched against a store made of other fragments.

01   DEFINITION

Condition in which what something is has to be settled by matching part of it against records that were themselves built from parts, so a close match is evidence of similar conditions of capture as much as of similar things.

02   CONDITIONS

UNCERTAINTY MISSING How each stored record was obtained is not part of the record.
TIME PRESSURE MODERATE There is room to compare and not room to go back to how the store was built.
ERROR ASYMMETRY ASYMMETRIC Naming it wrongly and refusing to name it are answered for differently.
OPERATOR STATE DEDICATED The person is doing the matching and is the one the naming falls to.

03   WHERE IT APPEARS

MEDICALA presentation is matched against recorded cases that were themselves incompletely captured.
INDUSTRIALA fault pattern is compared with a library built from previous faults recorded under different instrumentation.
PUBLIC SERVICEA record is resolved against holdings assembled from partial submissions over many years.
FINANCEAn entity is matched against records whose completeness varies by when and where they were captured.
LOGISTICSA consignment is identified against history entries captured by equipment of differing capability.
AI EXP.An input is matched against a corpus whose examples were themselves gathered under particular conditions.

04   WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE

An unnamed signal had to be resolved against a store built up over years out of encounters that were themselves partial. A close match meant the two had been captured under similar conditions at least as often as it meant they were the same thing. The work went into what the surface shows about how each stored record was obtained, so that the comparison was between two accounts rather than between a thing and a fact.

What stays unresolved is what a match is worth when both sides are partial — declining to name it leaves the question where it started, and naming it turns a resemblance into a record that the next match will be measured against.
