PS-REP-153 · r1 REPRESENTATION OBSERVED ENGAGED

MODALITY SYNC LOSS

The judgement is made by ear, and the evidence for it is drawn on a surface that is a moment behind.

01   DEFINITION

Condition in which a judgement formed in one sensory channel is represented in another and the two drift apart in time, so the operator cannot bind what was perceived to what is shown as one event.

02   CONDITIONS

UNCERTAINTY CONFLICTING What one channel reports and what the other shows are both correct and do not line up in time.
TIME PRESSURE SHORT The binding has to happen while the event is still present in the channel it was perceived in.
ERROR ASYMMETRY ASYMMETRIC Failing to bind the two costs more than binding two that turned out to be unrelated.
OPERATOR STATE DEDICATED The operator is attending to both channels at once, which is the arrangement the drift defeats.

03   WHERE IT APPEARS

MARITIMEA judgement made by ear has to survive being redrawn as a trace on glass.
MEDICALA waveform is shown to someone who was trained to listen for it.
INDUSTRIALThe panel was laid out for the plant as first built, not as it now runs.
AVIATIONThe instrument is exact, and what it is exact about is not what is being asked.

04   WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE

Measuring the offset was the easy half. Operators bound the two channels as one event well past the point the delay became measurable, and stopped binding them well before it grew large. Locating that boundary, rather than reducing the number, is where the work went.

The question it keeps returning to is what tolerance the binding survives — the point at which two channels stop being one event is not the point at which the delay becomes measurable.
