The thing being moved pushes back, and none of it reaches the hand.

Condition in which an operator moves something they are not physically joined to, so the resistance that would ordinarily say how hard they are pressing never arrives, and whatever resistance they do feel was put into the control on purpose by someone.

04 WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE
What was being moved sat where the operator could not reach it and pushed back against nothing they could feel. Every sensation in the control had been decided by somebody: how far it travelled, where it stiffened, whether it stopped. The work went into which single quantity the hand is answering to, and into what happens at the limit of it — whether the control refuses, or resists and lets them through anyway.
The question it keeps returning to is what an invented resistance is allowed to stand for — tying it to one quantity teaches the hand to read that quantity and nothing else, and letting it stand for the whole situation makes it a judgement the hand cannot argue with.
