PROGRESS WITHOUT A TOTAL

The bar implies a denominator that nobody has.

01   DEFINITION

Condition in which a task with no knowable end is shown as a proportion completed, so the display asserts a total that was never established, and finishing the shown part is read as having finished.

02   CONDITIONS

UNCERTAINTY UNRECORDED The size of the whole is not held anywhere, including by the surface showing a proportion of it.
TIME PRESSURE LOW Nothing is urgent; what fails is that the work stops where the bar stops.
ERROR ASYMMETRY DEFERRED Stopping early costs nothing until the part that was never entered is needed.
OPERATOR STATE DEDICATED The person is working through it and takes the bar as the account of how far they are.

03   WHERE IT APPEARS

PUBLIC SERVICEA record-gathering task is shown as a proportion although nobody knows how many records exist.
FINANCEA reconciliation is displayed as percent complete against a set whose size is itself being discovered.
MEDICALA history-taking flow shows progress against a total that depends on what is disclosed.
INDUSTRIALAn inspection sweep reports proportion covered over an extent that is not fully mapped.
EDUCATIONA course completion figure counts against a syllabus that keeps being added to.
AI EXP.A setup flow shows a filling bar for a configuration that has no defined end.

04   WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE

What had to be gathered had no edge to it, and the surface still had to give people a reason to keep going. A completed bar told them they were done with something that had no end; an open list told them the truth and they stopped after the first few. The work went into naming what each stage covers rather than what proportion it represents, so that finishing a stage meant something specific instead of meaning finished.

What stays unresolved is what a surface can show about work whose extent is unknown — an honest open list is one people abandon, and a bar that fills is one they stop at.
