MODE TRANSITION
INFERRED
OBSERVED
RECOVERY MODE OPACITY
While it is putting itself back together, nothing it shows means what it usually means.
01 DEFINITION
Condition in which a system behaves unlike itself while returning to service and goes on reporting itself in the terms of ordinary running, so its indications are read against expectations that no longer hold.
02 CONDITIONS
UNCERTAINTY
MISSING
That the system is in recovery is not among the things it reports.
TIME PRESSURE
MODERATE
Recovery takes time and decisions are made throughout it.
ERROR ASYMMETRY
ASYMMETRIC
Reading a recovery value as an ordinary one and distrusting a sound one differ in cost.
OPERATOR STATE
SUPERVISORY
The person is judging a system rather than operating it.
03 WHERE IT APPEARS
ENERGYA network being restored behaves unlike a running one and is displayed as a running one.
TELECOMA service coming back reports the same metrics it reports when settled, meaning different things.
MANUFACTURINGA line restarting shows the indicators of a line running, at values that would be alarming otherwise.
MEDICALA device reinitialising reports in its ordinary terms while none of them yet apply.
LOGISTICSA network catching up after disruption is described with the measures used for steady flow.
AI EXP.A system warming up reports as available and behaves as something else.
04 WHERE THIS IS SURFACING
This surfaces wherever recovery is a state the interface does not have. The display was made for running and for stopped, and coming back is neither.
What stays unresolved is whether a system in recovery should look like itself — a distinct appearance is one nobody has practised reading, and the ordinary one is read with ordinary expectations at the point they are least true.
