RENDER-LIMITED DETAIL LOSS

The detail that decides the judgement is finer than the display can draw.

01   DEFINITION

Condition in which the fine structure a signal carries falls below what the display grid can resolve, so the grounds for a judgement are lost in rendering rather than in the signal itself.

02   CONDITIONS

UNCERTAINTY MISSING What was smoothed away leaves no mark on the display that smoothed it.
TIME PRESSURE MODERATE There is time to look at the trace once, and not time to go back to the source.
ERROR ASYMMETRY ASYMMETRIC Missing the structure costs more than examining one that turned out to be noise.
OPERATOR STATE DEDICATED The operator is reading the display closely, which is why the loss is invisible — it looks like the signal.

03   WHERE IT APPEARS

MARITIMEA judgement made by ear has to survive being redrawn as a trace on glass.
MEDICALA waveform is shown to someone who was trained to listen for it.
ENERGYA slow drift is plotted at a scale on which slow drift looks flat.
MANUFACTURINGA defect is graded from an image whose lighting decided half the grade.

04   WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE

This was taken on when the change worth acting on turned out to be smaller than the smallest step the display could draw. The data held it; the picture did not. What the work settled was not how to draw it, but what a surface owes the reader when it cannot draw what it has.

What stays unresolved is how a display admits that it has smoothed something away, instead of presenting the smoothed version as though it were the signal.
