ROLE-SPLIT SURFACE

Everyone is looking at the same thing, and no two of them are looking for the same thing.

01   DEFINITION

Condition in which one surface is read at the same time by people whose purposes differ, so an arrangement that serves any one of them well removes what another was relying on, and the removal is not visible from inside either role.

02   CONDITIONS

UNCERTAINTY CONFLICTING Each role has a complete account of what the surface should be, and the accounts do not agree.
TIME PRESSURE MODERATE The conflict surfaces over the course of the work rather than at one moment.
ERROR ASYMMETRY ASYMMETRIC What one role loses by an arrangement and what another gains are not the same size and fall on different people.
OPERATOR STATE CONCURRENT They are reading it at the same time, which is the whole reason it is one surface.

03   WHERE IT APPEARS

MEDICALA single display is read during a procedure by people responsible for different things, and what one of them needs held steady is what another needs to change.
AVIATIONPlanning and executing are done from one picture by people working on different horizons, and the picture can only be optimised for one of them.
ENERGYOperations, maintenance and engineering read one plant view for incompatible purposes and cannot each have their own.
MANUFACTURINGOne line view serves the person running it, the person fixing it and the person accounting for it, and each finds the others' additions to be clutter.
PUBLIC SERVICEA common operating picture is shared by agencies whose responsibilities do not overlap, and its value comes from being the same picture.
MARITIMESurvey, navigation and analysis are carried out from one arrangement by people whose reasons for looking do not coincide.

04   WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE

Three roles were reading one arrangement, each for something the others did not need. Improving it for any of them took something from the rest, and the taking was invisible from inside each role. The work went into what has to stay in place for all of them precisely because it is what they point at when they disagree.

What stays unresolved is whether the surface should reshape itself for each reader or hold still for all of them — a view that rearranges around whoever is in front of it stops being the thing they can point at when they disagree.
