PS-REP-170 · r1 REPRESENTATION OBSERVED ENGAGED

SENSED AND RECEIVED

One mark on the surface, two very different reasons to believe it.

01   DEFINITION

Condition in which a display merges what the operator's own instruments registered with what was passed in from elsewhere, and the merged mark carries no indication of which part came from where, while the two differ in age, in how confident they are, and in what happens when they are wrong.

02   CONDITIONS

UNCERTAINTY CONFLICTING Two accounts of one object are present and are resolved into one before the operator sees them.
TIME PRESSURE MODERATE The difference matters when acting on the mark, not when it is drawn.
ERROR ASYMMETRY ASYMMETRIC Treating a received report as an own observation and doubting a sound one carry different costs.
OPERATOR STATE SUPERVISORY The operator is reading a picture assembled by something else, not assembling it.

03   WHERE IT APPEARS

FINANCEA position derived from an own record and one derived from an external feed appear as one number, and they do not fail together.
MEDICALResults measured here and results received from elsewhere are shown in one list, differing in age and in what a disagreement would mean.
LOGISTICSLocation known from an own device and location reported by a partner are drawn as the same dot on the same map.
TELECOMDirectly measured state and state relayed from another operator are merged into one status, and only one of them is refreshed on a known interval.
ENERGYOwn telemetry and figures received from a neighbouring system are combined into a single view of one asset.
DEFENSEWhat an own instrument registered and what arrived from outside are resolved into one mark on one surface.

04   WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE

Two accounts of the same object arrived by different routes and were drawn as one. They did not age at the same rate and they did not fail in the same way, and neither difference was anywhere on the surface. The work went into what the merged mark has to admit about itself before it is acted on.

The question it keeps returning to is what a merged view owes about its own composition — showing every source turns one readable mark into several, and showing none makes a report and an observation look like the same kind of thing.
