PS-DET-008 · r4 DETECTION INFERRED OBSERVED

THRESHOLD DRIFT

Each adjustment was small and reasonable, and the line is somewhere else.

01   DEFINITION

Condition in which the level at which something is reported is adjusted repeatedly to reduce what nobody acts on, and each adjustment is defensible, so the level ends somewhere nobody chose and nothing records where it began.

02   CONDITIONS

UNCERTAINTY UNRECORDED Where the level started, and who moved it, is not held with the level.
TIME PRESSURE LOW Each adjustment is unhurried and defensible on the day it is made.
ERROR ASYMMETRY DEFERRED A level too high costs nothing until the thing it was meant to catch.
OPERATOR STATE CONCURRENT The people adjusting it are doing so between other work.

03   WHERE IT APPEARS

MEDICALAlarm limits are widened after each stretch of nuisance, each widening judged on its own.
INDUSTRIALTrip points are relaxed over years by people who each moved them a little.
ENERGYReporting levels are raised to quieten a board and stay where they were last put.
FINANCEReview triggers are tuned to reduce false positives until few things reach review.
LOGISTICSException thresholds are eased each time the exceptions were not worth the handling.
TELECOMAlerting levels drift upward through routine tuning nobody records as a decision.

04   WHERE THIS IS SURFACING

This surfaces wherever reporting levels can be adjusted by the people receiving the reports. Every move reduces noise, and no single move is the one that went too far.

What stays unresolved is what a level owes about its own history — carrying every change turns an ordinary setting into a document, and carrying none leaves the current value as the only argument for itself.
