WORLD BEHIND THE DISPLAY

The better the account of the work, the thinner the account of the place the work is in.

01   DEFINITION

Condition in which the surface carrying what the operator needs occupies the same attention, and often the same line of sight, as the physical situation the operator is standing in, so improving one account degrades the other without either being wrong.

02   CONDITIONS

UNCERTAINTY UNRECORDED Nothing captures what the surroundings were doing while attention was inside the display.
TIME PRESSURE SUSTAINED The exposure lasts as long as the display is being used well.
ERROR ASYMMETRY ASYMMETRIC Interrupting a working display and missing the surroundings do not cost the same, and which costs more is not knowable in advance.
OPERATOR STATE CONCURRENT The operator is doing the task and standing in the place at the same time.

03   WHERE IT APPEARS

MEDICALAttention held by a magnified or reconstructed view is attention not held by the room and the person in it.
CONSTRUCTIONThe surface that carries the plan sits between the worker and the site the plan describes, and the site is where the hazard is.
MOBILITYInformation presented in the line of sight competes with the line of sight, and the competition is invisible until something in the surroundings needed it.
MANUFACTURINGGuidance carried on a worn or mounted surface improves the task and narrows the account of everything around the task.
LOGISTICSPicking and routing guidance holds attention inside the instruction while the floor it is followed on stays outside it.
DEFENSEAbsorption in what is presented is the point of presenting it, and the surroundings are where the unpresented risk is.

04   WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE

Absorption was the point and also the failure: the more the display carried, the less of the surrounding situation reached the person carrying it. Turning it down at the wrong moment costs the task; leaving it up at the wrong moment costs more than the task. The work went into what the surroundings are allowed to take back, and on whose signal.

What stays unresolved is what should be allowed to interrupt a display that is working — the moment the surroundings need attention is defined by the surroundings, and the display is the last thing positioned to notice it.
