CLASSIFICATION
INFERRED
OBSERVED
BOUNDARY CASE ESCALATION
It does not fit either box, so it goes up — and up is a slower place.
01 DEFINITION
Condition in which cases that fall between categories are passed to someone with more authority rather than more information, so the thing that made them hard is unchanged by the passing and only the clock has moved.
02 CONDITIONS
UNCERTAINTY
MISSING
What would resolve it is not what escalation supplies.
TIME PRESSURE
MODERATE
The case waits while it travels, and travelling is most of what happens.
ERROR ASYMMETRY
ASYMMETRIC
Deciding it locally and passing it up carry costs to different people.
OPERATOR STATE
SUPERVISORY
Whoever receives it is judging rather than observing.
03 WHERE IT APPEARS
MEDICALA presentation between categories goes to a senior clinician who has the same information.
PUBLIC SERVICEA case that fits no category is referred upward, where the categories are the same ones.
FINANCEAn unclassifiable transaction is passed to an authority level rather than to a source of evidence.
INDUSTRIALAn ambiguous fault is escalated to someone further from the equipment.
EDUCATIONA borderline assessment is sent up, where the borderline is unchanged.
AI EXP.A low-confidence output is routed to a human who is given the output and not what produced it.
04 WHERE THIS IS SURFACING
This surfaces wherever categories are exhaustive on paper and not in practice. The route out of an unclassifiable case leads upward, and what is upward is authority rather than evidence.
What stays unresolved is what a boundary case is being sent for — sending it for a decision asks someone further away to judge with less, and sending it for information means it was never an escalation but a request.
