04 WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE
How fast the record ran past was the operator's to set, and that setting was the difference between seeing a change and not knowing there had been one. Slow enough to catch the fine movement was too slow to keep up with what was arriving; fast enough to keep up lost the movement. The work went into what the surface says about the rate it is running at, so that the choice stayed visible as a choice rather than being felt as the state of the world.
The question it keeps returning to is what a surface owes about the settings it is not on — holding everything at every rate is not readable, and a reading at one rate carries no sign of what that rate was too coarse or too slow to hold.
