PS-REP-160 · r1 REPRESENTATION OBSERVED ENGAGED

OCCLUSION OVERRIDE

To show what is behind the wall, the display has to stop telling the truth about the wall.

01   DEFINITION

Condition in which something the operator must account for is hidden by the physical arrangement the display is otherwise faithful to, so representing it at all requires the display to contradict the spatial account it has taught the operator to rely on.

02   CONDITIONS

UNCERTAINTY MISSING Which part of the view is depicted faithfully and which part is not is not itself shown.
TIME PRESSURE SHORT The judgement is made in the moment the hidden thing matters, not before.
ERROR ASYMMETRY ASYMMETRIC Failing to represent the hidden thing and misrepresenting the arrangement carry different costs.
OPERATOR STATE DEDICATED The operator is reading this view and no other, so the view is the whole account.

03   WHERE IT APPEARS

MEDICALWhat must be avoided lies behind what is visible, and rendering it visible requires the view to stop respecting the arrangement it otherwise depicts exactly.
CONSTRUCTIONBuried services are shown on top of the ground that hides them, and the same view is trusted for what sits on the surface.
INDUSTRIALInternal condition is drawn over the enclosure that contains it, so one part of the view is a faithful picture and another part is not.
AVIATIONConditions beyond the visible field are drawn into it, and the drawn part and the seen part are read as one image.
DEFENSEElements screened by terrain or structure still have to be accounted for, and depicting them means depicting through the thing that screens them.

04   WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE

Whatever was hidden still had to be accounted for, and every way of showing it broke the rule that made the rest of the view readable. Showing it faithfully meant not showing it at all. The work went into what the display admits about its own exception, rather than into choosing between the two.

The question it keeps returning to is what a display owes the operator once it has shown one thing through a solid — the confidence that made the representation useful was built on its refusal to do exactly that.
