MODE TRANSITION
OBSERVED
ENGAGED
STATION OUTLIVES MACHINE
The surface becomes a different instrument; the hands trained on the last one do not.
01 DEFINITION
Condition in which one operating station serves things that share nothing but the station, so a change of what is attached remakes the surface completely while leaving the operator's practised sequences intact and pointed at an arrangement that is no longer there.
02 CONDITIONS
UNCERTAINTY
UNRECORDED
Which habits carry across a swap is not written down and is not known until one fires.
TIME PRESSURE
MODERATE
The cost appears in the period after a change rather than at the moment of it.
ERROR ASYMMETRY
ASYMMETRIC
A habit that fires in the wrong configuration and a hesitation in the right one are not the same size of failure.
OPERATOR STATE
DEDICATED
These are the operators who work the station often enough for the sequences to have become automatic.
03 WHERE IT APPEARS
MEDICALOne monitor is worked with different sensor packs attached, and the reading habits formed on one carry into the next.
CONSTRUCTIONThe cab is unchanged while what is on the end of the arm is not, and the operator brings the last attachment's reflexes to this one.
MANUFACTURINGA machine takes a different tool and becomes a different machine, worked from the same panel by the same person.
INDUSTRIALInterchangeable heads and probes share one control surface whose meaning changes entirely with what is fitted.
LOGISTICSOne handling unit takes several attachments, and the sequence learned for one is available to the hand under another.
DEFENSEA single platform carries interchangeable payloads whose control surfaces have nothing in common but the platform.
AI EXP.A surface that rearranges itself around what the person has done before becomes a different instrument with no event marking the change, and the sequence they practised points at an arrangement that is no longer there.
04 WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE
The platform was the same and everything mounted on it was not, so the station had to become a different instrument at each swap while being worked by the same people. What crossed the boundary was not knowledge but habit — the sequences that had stopped being decisions. The work went into which parts of the surface must never move, so that what does move is read as a change rather than performed as one.
What stays unresolved is how a surface announces that it is now a different instrument — a change dramatic enough to be unmistakable is one that has to be relearned each time, and one gentle enough to feel continuous is one the hands will treat as continuous.
