The moment the surface must ask is the moment the person most wants it not to.

04 WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE
The surface had two parties and only one of them was looking at it. The moment worth asking in was the moment the person was deepest in what they had come to do. The work went into giving them something that served them at that moment as well as it served the asking, so that the interruption was not spent only on the ask.
What stays unresolved is what the surface owes about whose interest it is serving at a given moment — declaring it invites the person to discount everything on the surface, and leaving it implicit is what makes an interruption feel like a manoeuvre.
