04 WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE
Measurement was intermittent because of the medium and the picture had to be continuous. Between one measurement and the next, what was drawn was the system's own arithmetic, and nothing distinguished it from the moment it had actually been seen. The work went into what the mark carries about its own age, rather than into how often it could be refreshed.
The question it keeps returning to is what a mark should do as it ages — fading it says the object is less present rather than less certain, and holding it steady lets a reading that was true some time ago be acted on as though it were now.
