PS-INP-154 · r1 INPUT OBSERVED ENGAGED

INPUT UNDER MOTION

The control is where it was put; the hand is not where it meant to be.

01   DEFINITION

Condition in which the operating surface and the operator move together, so the target sizes and spacing settled under still conditions no longer describe what can reliably be hit.

02   CONDITIONS

UNCERTAINTY MISSING How much the surface will move is not given by any specification the layout was drawn against.
TIME PRESSURE SHORT The action is taken inside a window that does not wait for the motion to settle.
ERROR ASYMMETRY ASYMMETRIC An input landing on the wrong control costs more than one that fails to land at all.
OPERATOR STATE CONCURRENT The hand is committed elsewhere for part of the reach, and the reach is not the task.

03   WHERE IT APPEARS

MARITIMEThe surface being touched and the person touching it move on the same swell.
AVIATIONAn input is made in conditions the input device was bench-tested without.
MOBILITYThe hand that operates is the hand that also has somewhere else to be.
CONSTRUCTIONThe device is operated at height, in weather, with one hand committed elsewhere.

04   WHAT AEON WORKED THROUGH HERE

Enlarging every target worked, and that was the problem — it spent the density that made the layout readable in the first place. The work here was on which targets earn the space when the surface and the operator move on the same motion, and on how the rest stay usable without it.

The question it keeps returning to is what target size means when the surface and the operator move on the same motion — enlarging everything spends the space that made the layout readable in the first place.
